Phnom Penh, March 18, 2024 – In a move towards modernizing the city's transportation infrastructure, the Council for the Development of Cambodia, led by Sun Chanthol, First Deputy Prime Minister, convened with representatives from China Metro Group and Guangzhou Metro Group to discuss a pioneering light rail line project. This initiative aims to connect Phnom Penh to the forthcoming new airport and introduce a subway system within the city.The meeting saw participation from the Minister of Public Works and Transport and key members of the Inter-Ministerial Commission, established to oversee the progression of this ambitious light rail and subway project. It focused on reviewing comprehensive presentations by the two major companies, encompassing urban structure, population dynamics, current road conditions, and preliminary feasibility assessments. The First Deputy Prime Minister shared insights into prior studies conducted by various international bodies to ascertain the most viable rail-based solutions for Phnom Penh. These included explorations into Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) systems by JICA of Japan, monorail prospects by CCECC, and subway viability studies by CCCC, aiming to weave a network that enhances connectivity and urban mobility. This pivotal meeting follows the First Deputy Prime Minister's October 2023 visit aimed at garnering investment interest, where he observed the Guangzhou Metro project. Renowned for its extensive network spanning approximately 2,000 kilometers across 50 lines and a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour, Guangzhou's metro system is a testament to cutting-edge technology and efficient operational management. With the new light rail and subway ventures on the horizon, Phnom Penh is poised for a transformation into a city equipped with advanced, sustainable transportation solutions, promising enhanced connectivity and an elevated urban living experience for its residents.
