The Cambodia-China Mekong Kratie Friendship Bridge, expected to be completed by September 2026, will significantly boost Cambodia’s transportation network—especially benefiting agriculture, agro-industry, and tourism in the country’s northeastern provinces.Spanning 1,761 meters and costing over $114 million, the bridge is a key infrastructure project funded by a concessional loan from the Government of China. The Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) began construction following the groundbreaking ceremony on January 2, 2023.
On July 7, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice-President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), Sun Chanthol, presided over the ceremony marking the connection of the bridge’s final segment in Chet Borey district, Kratie province. He was joined by Minister of Public Works and Transport Peng Ponea, Kratie Governor Var Thorn, officials from the provincial Department of Public Works and Transport, SCG representatives, local authorities, and many citizens.
Chanthol announced that as of the end of June 2025, the bridge structure is 96% complete, and the overall project, including the connecting road, has reached 70% completion. Based on current progress, the project may be finished ahead of schedule.
“The Cambodia-China Mekong Kratie Friendship Bridge and its connecting road will integrate Cambodia’s internal transportation system and promote economic development, particularly in agriculture, agro-industry, and tourism,” said Chanthol.
He also called for national unity, emphasizing the importance of peace and stability under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet to continue building a prosperous Cambodia.
