Cambodia’s National Assembly Approves Amendments to Road Law – The National Assembly has unanimously approved amendments to the Road Law aimed at updating vehicle weight regulations and strengthening penalties for violations, officials said Monday. The legislation was passed during an extraordinary session of the seventh legislature chaired by National Assembly President Khuon Sudary. All 114 lawmakers present voted in favour of the draft law. According to the assembly, the amendments revise 15 articles of the existing Road Law, promulgated in 2014. The updated provisions include changes to Articles 25, 26, 48 through 50, 56 through 61, and 66 through 69. Officials said the reforms were drafted in response to requests from the private sector and evolving socio‑economic conditions, and have been identified as a priority under the government’s Pentagonal Strategy‑Phase I. The changes focus on revising maximum vehicle weight limits permitted on Cambodia’s national road network, while also updating administrative penalties and criminal sanctions for offences related to exceeding authorised transport weight limits. Lawmakers said the amendments are intended to better align road transport regulations with Cambodia’s economic development and protect national road infrastructure from damage caused by overloaded vehicles. Following parliamentary debate and review, the legislation was approved and forwarded for the next stages of the legislative process. The reforms reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening road safety, improving transport governance and ensuring sustainable infrastructure development.
