The feasibility of a Light Railway line connecting Phnom Penh to the new airport and planned city metro (subway) was presented by the China Metro Group and Guangzhou Metro Group to the Inter-Ministry Committee of Cambodia on Saturday, said the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC).CDC said the Chinese firms presented the feasibility study to the Inter-Ministry Committee for review. The firms also put in a request for additional input.
In a statement the CDC said, Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of Cambodia Development Council, was invited to lead the inter-ministerial working group to discuss the light rail project with China Metro Group and Guangzhou Metro Group in Phnom Penh.
Minister of Public Works and Transport Peng Ponea and members of the Inter-Ministry Committee were present at the meeting to look into the study. Apart from the presentation, the meeting was also organised to better frame an overall vision of Phnom Penh. Aspects such as the size of the city, the number of citizens, the condition of the road usage and the first feasibility study on the project were discussed.
Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol also summarised the best aspects of different rails from other countries, said the CDC. He mentioned the feasibility study of Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) train type by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the feasibility study on Monorail and subway type by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
The CDC said that this meeting was organised after a visit by the Deputy Prime Minister to understand the development of the metro project in Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China, built by Guangzhou Metro Group, coordinated by China Metro Group. The Guangzhou Metro Station has about 50 lines and is equipped with advanced technology and digital systems to track and control the operations of trains and stations.
