Public Works Minister Sun Chanthol, in a virtual meeting on Wednesday, asked World Bank country manager Maryam Salim to help install AI Cameras and a Weigh-in-Motion Sensor Centralised Database Solution System along important National Roads in Cambodia. “This system is useful to help cut down the illegal overweight transportation damaging routes,” said Chanthol. He said the system can also evaluate speed, identification and weight of vehicles in question so that road accidents will be significantly reduced. Road accidents are a big problem that causes 4 to 5 deaths and 10 to 15 injuries each day, he said. Besides the camera system, Chanthol said he wants to collaborate with the World Bank to find experts who could directly deliver training courses to students at the Techo Sen Institute of Public Works and Transport or via online. The institute currently offers training courses on route and bridge engineering, and it cooperates with the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) with a number of foreign universities. In a joint virtual meeting in July, Interior Minister Sar Kheng and Chanthol announced the installation of speed cameras along a number of national roads. According to the Public Works Ministry, 14 speed cameras will be installed along National Road 3 at ten different places from Choam Chao Roundabout to Kampot city. Along National Roads 5 and 7, a number of speed cameras will be also installed with technical assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Kheng said he completely supported the initiative to install speed cameras to strictly enforce the traffic law without exception in order to cut down road accidents and saving lives.
