The Ministry of Public Works yesterday provided traffic control equipment to the National Police to help in lockdown measures. According to the ministry’s statement yesterday, Minister of Public Works Sun Chanthol donated 600 traffic cones and 500 safety barriers to the National Police to use at checkpoints during the lockdown in Phnom Penh and Takhmao city. The ministry called on all citizens to participate in the government’s lockdown, strictly adhere to the instructions of the Ministry of Health and to respect the traffic law, especially listening to the advice of traffic police officers or local authorities, so that everyone can soon return to a normal life, both economically and socially. Thou Srey Deth, a resident under lockdown, said she dares not cross the police barriers. “We must implement the government’s lockdown and not travel on the roads.” She called on people who can travel during the lockdown not to drive fast when the roads are quiet. “Some drivers drive so fast, it could cause traffic accidents,” she said. According to the Interior Ministry’s recent report, the number of road accidents dropped by 17 percent, or 153 cases, in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2020. It said that from January to March 2021, there were 763 road accident cases killing 433 people, down 60 cases, and injuring 1,113 others, down 202 cases. Minister of Interior Sar Kheng said recently that the trend indicates that Cambodians are better aware of traffic laws and abide by them. Kheng took the opportunity to express his appreciation to the authorities at all levels and road users who have been actively involved in the implementation of the traffic law.
