The Ministry of Public Works and Transport on Tuesday announced that electric vehicles will be charged 1,600 riels per kWh starting from August Electric vehicle (EV) owners will be charged 1,600 riel per kWh to recharge, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) said on Tuesday, as figures reveal the number of EVs nationwide are on the rise. Heang Sotheayuth, Director of Information and Public Relation at the MPWT, said that 1,600 riel per kWh, set by the Ministry, sits in line with prices in Australia and neighboring countries. As of now, there are more than 13 charging stations nationwide, four of which are owned by MPWT and the rest are privately owned, Sotheayuth said. Additionally, MPWT has seven EV charging stations. Four are in Phnom Penh and one can be found in each of the provinces of Siem Reap, Preah Sihanouk, and Battambang. Sotheayouth said, ”A national policy and strategy for the management and development of electric vehicles has been drafted.” “According to the Sub-Decree 214, MPWT is waiting for a suitable time for a meeting to continue discussing the draft,” he added. In 2021, Cambodia had 63 EVs. This figure increased by 1,000 percent in 2022 to 662 EVs. As of July 2023, there were 1,078 EVs, according to Sotheayuth.
