AKP Phnom Penh, February 23, 2022 —
Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has encouraged the public to actively take part in maintenance of environmental sanitation and proper waste disposal. Samdech Techo Hun Sen made the point while presiding over the ground-breaking ceremony of Japan-funded Choeung Ek Sewage Treatment Plant in Phnom Penh on Feb. 22. Waste segregation needs to be practiced to keep wet and dry wastes separately, or it will be challenging for landfill management leading to the expansion of the landfill to other location, he said.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen urged the Phnom Penh administration to speed up the study and preparation of new landfill construction as soon as possible, as it can take about two years to prepare for the operation of a new landfill. He also underlined the Royal Government of Cambodia's policy in solid waste management and sustainable urban development that needs collective effort, particularly the public participation. Phnom Penh capital alone generate about 3,000 tonnes of garbage a day, and more than 3 million tonnes of garbage are transported to the landfills across Cambodia annually.
